Drivers’ Q&A

Today’s blog is about our drivers. These are the people who see you most often and who travel many miles to drop off your goods. We’ve asked them some questions about their work as driver for We Supply Yachts.

  1. Since when do you work for We Supply Yachts?

Since May 1, 2018 I work as a driver at We Supply Yachts. It is a great, young and informal company where the lines are short, and we get better every year. As a driver at WSY you get a lot of freedom (and therefore also confidence) from Maarten and Joost and that is very important to me. The collaboration with everyone at WSY is very smooth and easy. As a driver, I know that I represent WSY, so I do my best to provide the best quality and service possible.

  1. What was the furthest location you delivered to?

The furthest location I drove to was Gibraltar (almost 4900 km) with Vougliagmeni (near Athens) as a close second (almost 4500 km). A location does not always have to be far away, I also enjoy driving to new destinations and gaining new impressions.

  1. What was the most beautiful location you’ve ever drove to?

Each location has its unique and special points of interest. The nice ports of Barcelona and Antibes, the beautiful drive to Trieste etc. But for me there are 2 locations that I like the most: Bergen in Norway and Dubrovnik in Croatia. Both because the journey there is so beautiful and varied. To Bergen you drive through Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway and you then drive over that beautiful high and long Oresund Bridge between Copenhagen and Malmö. The drive from Oslo to Bergen (almost 500 km on 2 lane roads) is breathtakingly beautiful. The journey goes along fjords, through narrow tunnels, treeless plains and the view is different every time. The drive to Dubrovnik is through Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia with an ever-changing landscape. The mountains in Austria are impressive and the last 200 km in Croatia to Dubrovnik are beautiful. With a ferry you sail from Ploc to Trpanje and then you drive for almost 100 km on very narrow roads through a beautiful landscape with beautiful small villages.

  1. What was the most memorable moment during a delivery?

During a delivery in Bergen (Norway) I was invited by the chef for breakfast on the yacht. After the (delicious) breakfast we also got a tour around the yacht, a very nice and special experience. I also have many nice moments during my overnight stays on the way to and back from my destinations. As driver I have to arrange my overnight stays by myself and I always try to have my stays at a small family hotel or B&B. You get to know so many different people then and you have the best contacts, conversations and experiences.

  1. Since when do you work for We Supply Yachts?

If I’m correct, I had the first ride with a colleague to Mallorca (this was in June 2018). I then received Aardvis (name of one truck) who was just new. So you can say that I drove a few kilometers, just like meeting chefs and seeing yachts / places.

  1. What was the furthest location you delivered to?

I have no idea which was the furthest, but I have been to Stockholm Sweden, Naples Italy, Bergen Norway, Palma Mallorca & Olbia Italy. Of course there are more, but the furthest kilometers are to Naples, at some point in summer of 2019 I drove almost every week to Naples.

  1. What was the most beautiful location you’ve ever drove to?

I’ll go for Stavanger Norway; the trip was already beautiful. You leave Rhoon to Hirtshals Denmark, there you go on the ferry to Norway. After delivery, I had to return to Rhoon and catch the ferry in Langesund. To get there, you had to go via the Norwegian highway, but I chose to drive the alternative road.

  1. What was the most memorable moment during a delivery?

During a ride, if I can remember correctly to Antibes France. This was 3 weeks before Christmas, before I started the ride I had decorated the bus with Christmas lights. This was both inside and outside the bus, the disadvantage was that I had to deliver during the day so that the yacht crew could not admire the decoration. And last week (04/16/20), I went to Barcelona to deliver a yacht there. During the ride I was checked twice at the border about what I was going to do. This was during COVID-19, all highways except trucks and a single passenger car were empty. The same as the Ramblas in Barcelona, never seen this  so quiet.

  1. Since when do you work for We Supply Yachts?

I started in the summer of 2018. And I also enjoyed working in the summer months of 2019. The other months I am busy with my studies, until it is time for the new season.

  1. What was the furthest location you delivered to?

The furthest, first and most enjoyable ride I have had was a ride to Mallorca. It was of course super cool to take such a trip by bus for the first time, and that you also have to stay overnight on a ferry, etc. I like an adventure so I can personally enjoy that. t is also one of the nicer locations I have delivered. After delivery, I was able to enjoy the Spanish sun by the sea, with a view over the bay of Palma. Until it was time to board the ferry again. So very nice!

  1. What was the most beautiful location you’ve ever drove to?

As I said Mallorca will remain one of my favorite locations. But sometimes I also have to deliver to a beach near Saint Tropez. I usually have to be there very early, so I can enjoy the morning sun with my feet in the sand. I often use the waiting moment before or the moment immediately after unloading for a breakfast with a view. Still it is difficult to choose, because actually all places are beautiful.

  1. What was the most memorable moment during a delivery?

The last ride of 2019 was a special one. After a morning delivery to Sardinia, I had to take the ferry back to the mainland of Italy urgently because a colleague was unlucky with a bus near Parma. However, my colleague was in a hurry because he still had to deliver to a customer. Then I drove almost all night towards Parma, so that we could immediately overload the buses in the early morning. Fortunately, the garage staff was willing to help us with a forklift. After my colleague dropped me at the hotel, he continued on his way to the customer and I waited until the bus was repaired. However, this took longer than expected so I stayed there for a few days. The garage staff was also very unclear, so I waited there for almost 2 full days. It was all annoying, of course, but on the other hand it was also an adventure itself. And as I’ve said before, I like that.

  1. Since when do you work for We Supply Yachts?

I have been a driver for We Supply Yachts since the start in 2018.

  1. What was the furthest location you delivered to?

The furthest location that I have ever been to in behalve of We Supply Yachts was Dubrovnik, a beautiful harbour town in the southernmost tip of Croatia.

  1. What was the most beautiful location you’ve ever drove to?

The delivery in Dubrovnik was also the most memorable place for me, because of the beautiful scenery on the roads on the coastline. It was a long but magnificent ride, involving small boat trips to skip the borders of Bosnia, driving along the coast of Croatia, a night on a ferry from Italy to Croatia and of course one of the most beautiful bridges in Europe (see attached picture). The fact that the crew invited me to share dinner with them was also one of the things that made this trip the most memorable of all.

  1. What was the most memorable moment during a delivery?

There are a lot of momentous situations that I’ve experienced throughout the years, so it’s hard picking one. But one of the things that I really liked was a delivery at a chalet in the east of France. It was a beautiful sunny day, but the chalet was located on one of the many mountains in that district. The road to the top started with sunny dry roads, but as soon as I reached higher altitudes the roads became snowier. As soon as I reached the top, I could barely reach the chalet because of all the snow. But the view at the top was magnificent and worth the hassle reaching it.

  1. Since when do you work for We Supply Yachts?

I have been working as a WSY driver since May 2019

  1. What was the furthest location you delivered to?

The furthest location has been Taormina in Sicily so far, personally I would like to go to Greece again.

  1. What was the most beautiful location you’ve ever drove to?

I think Sardinia and Sicily are the most beautiful locations, beautiful bays and crossings by boat. For example, the trip ‘Giovanni to Messina’ is beautiful because in the time that I have been there in 40 years nothing has changed. everything is exactly the same as 35 years ago.

  1. What was the most memorable moment during a delivery?

There is one delivery that has stayed with me. They were already waiting for me, while I put the bus next to the boat the chef took me to the kitchen area and gave me coffee and showed me around and said that I could get anything for breakfast. He made sure that the bus was empty after 2 hours and I could enjoy of my breakfast.
